The blaze was reported at 221 Emmet St. just after 5:35 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said.

Emergency crews arrived at the vacant commercial building and discovered “extremely heavy” fire, which resulted in a total roof collapse and other severe damages, Ambrose said.

No injuries have been reported among the approximately 90 firefighters battling the blaze, though an adjacent building was damaged, Ambrose said.

The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit.
